Ski season ending.

This weekend (April 10) the lifts stop running at Whitefish Ski Resort here in town. It has been an epic season, great snow, tons of fun and awesome memories. The best part for me was all of the time Jo Jo and I got to spend on the mountain together. She's only 8 years old but she has blossomed into an incredible, fearless skier. She tackled her first black diamond this January. A huge accomplishment for her age. It has been amazing watching her go.

What's on tap?

We've got a kegerator at the shop now (against my better judgment.). We've been known to crack the occasional beer at the end of the day or during shop clean up time... but we've always just grabbed a 6 pack. Now the beer flows like water. Our first quarter barrel comes from the Great Northern Brewery here in Whitefish.
Good Medicine Imperial Ale is what was selected for the inaugural brew.

Big Mountain Snowshoe.

We snuck out of the shop today to snowshoe to the top of Big Mountain. It was a beautiful sunny day and Barb and I needed to get out and get our hearts pumping.... This did the trick. It was a grueling, lung searing climb to the top. The 2700 feet of elevation gain got our hearts, lungs and quads burning. But the views into Glacier National Park from the summit and the incredible light bouncing off of the famous snow ghosts made it totally worth it.

The Bubble.
We have a new carving station at the WJP. As part of our Dust Contaiment Initiative (aka the DCI) we have a new sanding room that has been dubbed "The Bubble." (Insert Seinfeld Bubble Boy joke here.)

Anyone who visits our shop knows just how dusty it can get... this is a much needed addition, for sure.

der Steingreifen... from paddle scraps...

Whiskeyjack Craftsman Jack M. created this fine Beer Stein Retriever from wood found in our massive scrap wood pile.

As part of the Whitefish Winter Carnival, the local brewhouse (http://www.greatnorthernbrewing.com) held a barter contest for free beer for a year... and this was Jack's submission. The brewhouse keeps their beer steins hung on hooks on the ceiling behind the bar. For years they have been using a pathetic looking, duct taped stein retriever to get them down. Now they can use this sweet handcrafted creation. Nice work Jack! Way to go the extra mile for free beer.

More photos of Jack's creative wood pile inventions to come. (curling brooms, beer tap handles, trophies...)

Ski Opener!!!!! Finally.

After months and months and months of waiting, Whitefish Ski Resort is finally open. Our shop is located just below the resort and we have killer views of the ski runs from outside our doors... It has been pure torture looking up at the smooth, snowy, empty ski runs the past few weeks.

While Whiskeyjack Craftswoman Julie N. has been hiking up the mountain and skiing down for more than a month, us lazier ones have to wait for the lifts to start running.

It snowed nearly every day during the month of November so conditions right now awesome.

Below are some killer shots of a perfect, amazing sunny opener.
